A wave of concern is rising in Brevard County as environmental advocates challenge Blue Originās plan to discharge treated industrial wastewater into the Indian River Lagoon.
The company, led by Jeff Bezos, seeks a permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to release up to 500,000 gallons daily into a stormwater system that flows to the fragile lagoon.
This waterway, already battling seagrass loss, fish kills, and algae blooms, has received a $100 million boost from Governor Ron DeSantisā restoration program. Many locals fear the new wastewater could worsen ongoing environmental struggles.
Nearly 50,000 residents, led by real estate agent Jill Steinhauser, have petitioned for tougher permit restrictions or outright denial, urging stronger protections and independent monitoring.
The Brevard County Commission unanimously requested a public hearing to air community fears.
Blue Origin argues the process is safe and regulated, but the debate spotlights the communityās intense determination to safeguard the lagoonās future. Read More... |
Brevard County is launching an innovative fight against dengue fever by releasing sterile male mosquitoes, called āsterile skeeters,ā into local neighborhoods.
This bold step follows a spike in dengue cases ā 35 reported so far in 2025, the highest anywhere in Florida.
The focus is on the Aedes aegypti mosquito, known for transmitting dengue.
Sterilized males are created using low-dose X-rays, preventing them from fathering offspring and gradually shrinking mosquito populations.
Crucially, only males are released, and since they do not bite or spread disease, thereās no added risk to residents.
The county highlights how safe and environmentally friendly this strategy is compared to gene-modification methods.
Promising results from other Florida trials offer hope.
Residents can help by removing standing water, supporting Brevardās mission to halt dengue and keep public health strong. Read More... |

A Chinese satellite narrowly avoided a collision with a Starlink satellite from SpaceX after both crafts passed within just 200 meters of each other over Earth's surface.
Launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the Chinese satelliteās near-miss with the Starlink satellite at 560 kilometers altitude spotlights rising congestion in low Earth orbit.
Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Engineering at SpaceX, stressed the urgent need for better communication among operators, citing risks caused by the absence of shared trajectory data.
In response, SpaceX will lower the orbits of roughly 4,400 Starlink satellites from 550 to 480 kilometers in 2026.
This move is intended to reduce collision risks and speed up the deorbiting of defunct satellites, though it brings challenges like reduced satellite lifespan due to increased atmospheric drag.
The incident fuels pressure for international coordination and rules, as rising satellite numbers intensify the risk of dangerous orbital debris. Read More... |
