A wave of concern is rising in Brevard County as environmental advocates challenge Blue Origin’s plan to discharge treated industrial wastewater into the Indian River Lagoon.

The company, led by Jeff Bezos, seeks a permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to release up to 500,000 gallons daily into a stormwater system that flows to the fragile lagoon.

This waterway, already battling seagrass loss, fish kills, and algae blooms, has received a $100 million boost from Governor Ron DeSantis’ restoration program. Many locals fear the new wastewater could worsen ongoing environmental struggles.

Nearly 50,000 residents, led by real estate agent Jill Steinhauser, have petitioned for tougher permit restrictions or outright denial, urging stronger protections and independent monitoring.

The Brevard County Commission unanimously requested a public hearing to air community fears.

Blue Origin argues the process is safe and regulated, but the debate spotlights the community’s intense determination to safeguard the lagoon’s future.

Brevard County is launching an innovative fight against dengue fever by releasing sterile male mosquitoes, called ā€œsterile skeeters,ā€ into local neighborhoods.

This bold step follows a spike in dengue cases — 35 reported so far in 2025, the highest anywhere in Florida.

The focus is on the Aedes aegypti mosquito, known for transmitting dengue.

Sterilized males are created using low-dose X-rays, preventing them from fathering offspring and gradually shrinking mosquito populations.

Crucially, only males are released, and since they do not bite or spread disease, there’s no added risk to residents.

The county highlights how safe and environmentally friendly this strategy is compared to gene-modification methods.

Promising results from other Florida trials offer hope.

Residents can help by removing standing water, supporting Brevard’s mission to halt dengue and keep public health strong.

A Chinese satellite narrowly avoided a collision with a Starlink satellite from SpaceX after both crafts passed within just 200 meters of each other over Earth's surface.

Launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, the Chinese satellite’s near-miss with the Starlink satellite at 560 kilometers altitude spotlights rising congestion in low Earth orbit.

Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Engineering at SpaceX, stressed the urgent need for better communication among operators, citing risks caused by the absence of shared trajectory data.

In response, SpaceX will lower the orbits of roughly 4,400 Starlink satellites from 550 to 480 kilometers in 2026.

This move is intended to reduce collision risks and speed up the deorbiting of defunct satellites, though it brings challenges like reduced satellite lifespan due to increased atmospheric drag.

The incident fuels pressure for international coordination and rules, as rising satellite numbers intensify the risk of dangerous orbital debris.

Real Estate Snapshot – Brevard County

šŸ” Space Coast Housing Market Update — February 2026

Brevard County, FL | Market Snapshot & What It Means for Buyers & Sellers

The Brevard County housing market continues its transition toward a more balanced market, with data through late 2025 and early 2026 showing subtle shifts from the intense seller-dominance we’ve seen in recent years.

šŸ“Š Price Trends

  • Median sale prices across the county have softened slightly year-over-year in many data sets — with median sale prices around $352,000, down roughly 4–5% compared to last year in recent MLS reports.
  • Zillow’s Home Value Index also shows typical home values near $335,000, reflecting a mild yearly dip.
  • Some MLS reports still show single-family median prices near $380,000, suggesting variation by neighborhood and property type.

šŸ’” What this means: Prices aren’t collapsing — they’re drifting lower or holding relatively steady, giving buyers a bit more breathing room than the frenzied market of 2021–2022.

šŸ“¦ Inventory & Days on Market

  • Inventory levels have grown modestly, with monthly supply inching toward what’s considered ā€œbalancedā€ territory.
  • Median days on market figures have been reported in the mid-60’s to high-70’s (e.g., ~65–78 days to contract).

šŸ“ˆ What this means: Buyers now have more choices and time to make decisions. Sellers must price accurately and present listings well to stand out — especially as more homes come online.

šŸ“ Activity & Buyer Behavior

  • Sales activity has shown signs of life — closed sales are up year-over-year in recent months, even as pricing softens.
  • Condo and townhouse segments show even higher inventory and buyer choice, while single-family homes remain somewhat tighter.

šŸ” What this means: Buyers are active, but selective. Well-priced homes — especially those marketed with strong visuals and online presence — are still attracting offers quickly.

šŸ“‰ Mortgage & Economic Backdrop

Nationally, mortgage rates have ticked slightly higher recently — around the low 6% range — but remain below the nearly 7% levels seen a year ago. Lower rates and improving affordability prospects are expected to help sustain interest in homeownership in 2026.

🧭 Big Picture Takeaways for Brevard

āž”ļø Market shifting toward balance — not a crash, not overheated growth.

āž”ļø Prices leveling and inventory increasing mean more negotiating power for informed buyers.

āž”ļø Sellers still benefit from strategic pricing and presentation — overpriced properties are taking longer to sell.

āž”ļø Condos & townhomes offer wider inventory but may require more effort to stand out.

šŸ—£ļø Pro Tip for Buyers

With a broader choice of properties and more time to evaluate, now is a strong season to shop strategically — especially if your financing is locked in or you can act quickly when opportunities arise.

šŸ“ Pro Tip for Sellers

Accurate pricing, professional staging, and strong digital presentation continue to be non-negotiables for attracting buyer attention early — especially in a market with more choices.
