Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a major plan to eliminate property taxes on primary residences statewide, calling current local tax burdens a serious strain for homeowners.

DeSantis criticized what he described as overspending by local governments, arguing this drives up taxes and pushes residents to the breaking point.

His initiative would require a constitutional amendment, demanding approval from 60% of voters—possibly on the 2026 ballot.

Meanwhile, state lawmakers are weighing proposals such as a $500,000 homestead exemption, increased caps on tax assessments, and optional full tax elimination for certain households.

However, the Florida Policy Institute warns that removing property taxes could slash billions from schools and local budgets, pushing other taxes, like sales tax, as high as 12%.

DeSantis acknowledged the need for a careful, phased approach as residents consider the sweeping change.

The outcome could dramatically reshape Florida’s financial future.

Florida residents and businesses face notable legal changes on January 1, 2026, as several new laws take effect across the state.

‘Dexter’s Law’ requires the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to launch a searchable, public database listing individuals convicted of animal cruelty — a direct response to a high-profile shelter dog abuse case in Fort DeSoto Park.

Pet insurance now falls under ‘property insurance’ with stricter regulations, ensuring clarity, honest disclosure, and protection against misleading wellness claims.

State employees will benefit from no out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic and supplemental breast exams, making preventive healthcare more accessible.

The window for health insurers and HMOs to submit psychologist claims shortens from 30 to 12 months, streamlining processes and boosting efficiency.

Healthcare providers must refund patient overpayments within 30 days or risk fines, strengthening consumer protections.

Florida’s new laws underscore a commitment to animal welfare, fairness, and improved healthcare access statewide.

Pro tip: Bring warm clothes, flashlight/headlamp, bug spray, tripod for camera — arrive ~60 min early to set up gear in the dark.

No Additional Confirmed Launches (Dec 16–18, 2025)

At this time, the publicly available manifest shows no further launches from the Space Coast during this period. That said, for constellation-builder flights like Starlink, schedules can shift or new launches may be added on short notice — so it pays to stay alert.

General Launch-Watching Tips

  • Check a live-launch calendar the same day — times and dates can shift quickly with weather or payload readiness.
  • Arrive early (45–60 minutes before launch) — good for parking, setup, and to catch pre-launch buildup.
  • Pack smart: sunglasses (for daylight/early morning launches near water), blankets or chairs, water, bug spray (if near water), and camera gear (tripod, zoom or wide lens as desired).
  • Be flexible — constellation-launch schedules can change or new missions can appear. A launch-watch plan that’s ready to adapt pays off.

Rib City at Grant Station — A Barbecue Landmark in Grant-Valkaria, Florida

Tucked along the Indian River in the small town of Grant-Valkaria, Rib City at Grant Station is where Old Florida history meets slow-smoked barbecue. Located at 5390 S. U.S. Highway 1, Grant-Valkaria, FL 32949, this local favorite blends a 19th-century building, laid-back atmosphere, and hearty comfort food into one memorable dining experience.

A Bit of History

The building that now houses Rib City dates back to the 1890s, when it began life as a general store and trading post serving early residents of the area. Over the decades it has been:

  • A general store and post office for local families and travelers
  • A telegraph office and gathering spot for the small riverside community
  • A local grocery and “Towne & Country Shop” under various owners

In the 2000s, new owners carefully restored the historic structure and brought it back to life as Historic Grant Station. Today, the property includes Rib City at Grant Station, an ice cream shop, and event space – turning a 125-year-old landmark into a vibrant community hub.

What to Expect: Food, Atmosphere & Vibe

Rib City specializes in classic American barbecue with a focus on tender, flavorful ribs and smoked meats. Many guests describe the baby back ribs as “fall-off-the-bone” tender, with a smoky flavor and a touch of sweetness from the house barbecue sauce.

Menu highlights typically include:

  • Baby back ribs and St. Louis style ribs
  • Smoked pulled pork and smoked chicken
  • Combination platters for sampling multiple meats
  • Hearty sandwiches, including stacked pulled-pork options
  • Classic sides like mac & cheese, barbecue beans, coleslaw, and green beans

Inside, you’ll find a rustic, casual dining room that shows off the building’s history with wood, brick, and vintage details. It’s a family-friendly spot that feels relaxed and welcoming, whether you’re stopping in for a quick lunch or settling in for a leisurely dinner.

There is also a full-service bar with beer and wine, and the overall atmosphere is friendly, down-to-earth, and very “Space Coast local.”

The Federal Reserve has enacted a third straight 25-basis-point cut, lowering its benchmark interest rate to a 3.5%–3.75% range amid persistent inflation and a cooling labor market.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell described the current rate as being in “neutral” territory, signaling a cautious wait-and-see approach as inflation and employment trends pull in opposite directions.

Most officials predict another rate cut by the end of 2026, but opinions within the committee remain divided.

Economic projections now show slightly higher GDP growth, steadier unemployment, and easing inflation expectations.

Mortgage rates remain high, with local housing affordability still challenged by limited supply and first-time buyers holding back.

Uncertainty persists, especially as potential leadership changes at the Fed could steer future rate decisions, affecting local borrowing, home prices, and consumer power.
