Recent tests have revealed high levels of PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," in the drinking water supplied by the Mims and Barefoot Bay treatment facilities in Brevard County.

These synthetic substances are notorious for their persistence in the environment and the human body.

Linked to health hazards like cancer, thyroid disorders, and heart disease, PFAS contamination has sparked growing concern among local residents.

County Commissioner Katie Delaney highlighted the risks of prolonged PFAS exposure, urging swift action to protect families.

Plans are underway to install reverse osmosis systems, although this solution could take years to complete.

In the meantime, residents are advised to use high-quality water filters.

Communities near former military sites, including Patrick Space Force Base, face elevated risks due to historic use of PFAS-laden firefighting foam.

Staying updated on water quality reports is crucial for all Brevard residents concerned about their health.

Visitors planning trips to Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National Seashore should note special changes as NASA prepares for the upcoming Artemis II mission.

From January 12 to January 30, 2026, Playalinda’s operating hours will shift to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., a reduction from normal times.

Beginning January 31 and lasting through February 6, or until the Artemis II launch succeeds, the entire Playalinda District will be closed to the public for safety and security.

Normal schedules will resume the day after launch, restoring full access.

These temporary restrictions are due to Playalinda’s close location to Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39B and the need to protect both visitors and launch operations.

Guests are urged to check for updates and explore other beach options until reopening.
