A Jellyfish in the Sky! Why Today’s Launch Glowed Over the Space Coast

October 13, 2026

Early risers got a spectacular bonus with this morning’s rocket launch: a luminous “space jellyfish” floating across the predawn sky.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at approximately 6:33 a.m. EDT, carrying NASA’s CRS-35 cargo mission toward the International Space Station. As it climbed, its exhaust spread into a glowing cloud that transformed the morning sky.

What creates the jellyfish effect? It comes down to sunlight, altitude and timing. While people on the ground are still in Earth’s shadow, the rocket climbs high enough for its exhaust plume to catch sunlight. That illuminated exhaust—mostly water vapor and carbon dioxide—appears as a bright, translucent cloud against the darker sky.

At high altitude, lower surrounding air pressure allows the exhaust to spread widely. Its billowing shape and trailing plume create the resemblance to a jellyfish drifting through the sky.

When can you see it? Dawn and dusk launches offer the best opportunity: shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, when the ground is dark but sunlight still reaches the rocket’s high-altitude exhaust. Visibility also depends on cloud cover, the flight path and your viewing location.

For Space Coast skywatchers, it’s one more reason to keep an eye on twilight launches. Sometimes the rocket’s journey brings an extraordinary light show along with it.

Another view captures the plume’s delicate texture and sweeping glow. Photo: Gretchen Morris.

Four locally acquired dengue cases in Brevard County have prompted a health advisory and a coordinated response from health officials and mosquito control crews.

Crews are monitoring mosquitoes, treating targeted areas and spraying overnight, but residents can help prevent bites at home.

Empty standing water from containers, repair window screens, use repellent as directed and cover exposed skin when practical, even during daylight hours.

Dengue spreads mainly through infected Aedes mosquitoes, not casual contact with someone who is sick.

Symptoms may appear within about two weeks and include fever, severe muscle or joint pain, and a rash.

Because dengue can resemble the flu, seek medical advice for an unexplained fever, especially after mosquito exposure.

Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or bleeding require urgent care.

Ask a clinician before taking aspirin or ibuprofen for suspected dengue because they may increase bleeding risk.

SpaceX Proposes a 32-Mile Fuel Pipeline Through Brevard
AI-generated illustration created with OpenAI ImageGen for The Space Coast Spotlight. Conceptual pipeline and launch facility; not an actual route or photograph of the proposed project.

A proposed natural gas pipeline would bring another major piece of space industry infrastructure to Brevard County.

SpaceX subsidiary Coastal Connect Services proposes a 32.4-mile line connecting the existing Florida Gas Transmission system with the company's operations at Cape Canaveral. SpaceX says it needs a dependable methane supply for future Starship launches and wants to reduce reliance on tanker trucks.

The proposal comes as the Federal Aviation Administration reviews plans for up to 76 Starship launches annually from Space Launch Complex 37. Environmental advocates have raised concerns about the effects of expanded launch activity and supporting infrastructure on sensitive habitat around the Cape.

Regulatory review does not mean construction has received every approval. The Florida Public Service Commission's role concerns natural gas transportation service and rates, rather than environmental authorization for the entire pipeline.

For residents, the project highlights the growing connection between Space Coast industry, regional infrastructure and habitat protection.
