Brightline’s high-speed rail expansion has highlighted a disparity between Brevard and Orange counties in train-related incidents.

Brevard County’s tracks cut through busy cities like Cocoa and Melbourne where they run at street level, intersecting roads and sidewalks with minimal barriers.

This design, combined with densely populated neighborhoods, has led to more frequent accidents, such as the 2025 car-train collision in Rockledge.

In contrast, Orange County’s newly elevated and fenced rail corridor sharply limits public access, resulting in far fewer incidents.

Officials, including State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith, are urging Brevard to adopt safer crossings, better fencing, and community outreach.

However, experts caution that human behavior remains a risk, and retrofitting older tracks is complex.

Brightline is investing federal funds to upgrade safety, but whether these improvements will succeed in Brevard’s established communities is still uncertain.

Florida is moving to standardize how cash transactions are rounded as the U.S. Mint will stop producing pennies in November 2025.

This change means both consumers and businesses must soon navigate purchases without one-cent coins.

To address this, lawmakers have proposed bills in the state House and Senate to ensure purchases are fairly rounded.

Under the plan, totals ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents would round down to the nearest nickel, while those ending in 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents round up.

Supporters believe standard rounding rules will benefit everyone, yet some shoppers remain divided on whether it’s better to round up or down.

As pennies disappear, the debate highlights a need for clear guidelines — and Florida hopes its legislation becomes the solution.

Housing affordability remains a top concern heading into 2026, as many Americans find it harder than ever to buy a home.

High mortgage rates, stagnant wages, and rising home prices have created a difficult market, making homeownership elusive for countless families.

Experts say a return to pre-pandemic affordability would require major shifts, such as mortgage rates dropping to 2.65%, incomes rising 56%, or home prices falling 35%—scenarios that remain unrealistic for now.

States are responding with new policies.

New York, led by Governor Kathy Hochul, is investing over $1.5 billion in increased housing supply and new vouchers for the homeless, with $100 million for infrastructure and $50 million for affordable starter homes.

Projects like Charlotte’s mixed-use Centre South—featuring 66 affordable apartments—aim to ease local pressures.

While there’s no quick fix, a blend of more housing, better wages, and stable mortgage rates may offer a path forward.
