Understanding the Higher Incidence of Brightline Accidents in Brevard County Compared to Orange County

Brightline's expansion into Central Florida has brought high-speed rail service to both Brevard and Orange counties. However, a notable disparity has emerged: Brevard County reports a higher number of train-related incidents compared to Orange County. Understanding the underlying factors is crucial for enhancing safety measures.

 

In Brevard County, the Brightline tracks traverse densely populated areas, including cities like Cocoa, Rockledge, Melbourne, and Palm Bay. The tracks run at street level, intersecting numerous roads and pedestrian pathways without extensive physical barriers. This design increases the likelihood of vehicles and pedestrians encountering trains, leading to a higher incidence of accidents. For instance, in November 2025, a car collided with a Brightline train at the Barton Boulevard and U.S. 1 crossing in Rockledge, resulting in significant vehicle damage but no serious injuries. 

 

Conversely, Orange County's Brightline corridor features newly constructed, elevated tracks with fencing that effectively separate train operations from vehicular and pedestrian traffic. This infrastructure minimizes direct interactions between trains and the public, contributing to a lower number of reported incidents. Additionally, the route through Orange County passes through less densely populated areas, reducing potential conflict points.

 

The disparity in accident rates has prompted discussions among lawmakers and safety advocates. State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith has emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures in Brevard County, such as longer and more secure crossing gates, higher fences, and investment in suicide prevention programs. He argues that implementing infrastructure similar to Orange County's could significantly reduce accidents.

 

Despite these concerns, some experts contend that human behavior plays a significant role in these incidents. Jim Kovalsky of the Florida East Coast Railway Society notes that individuals determined to access the tracks may find ways to do so, regardless of physical barriers. He also points out that the older, street-level tracks in Brevard County were established long before the surrounding communities developed, making retrofitting challenging. 

 

In response to the rising number of incidents, Brightline has received federal funding aimed at improving safety measures. This includes grants for installing fences around tracks and upgrading crossings. However, the effectiveness of these measures in Brevard County remains to be seen, as the region continues to grapple with the complexities of integrating high-speed rail into established communities.
