Cocoa’s Creative Lab Turns Curiosity Into Hands-On Fun |
Explore 3D printing, podcasting and a library tradition stretching back to 1895 |

Cocoa offers a satisfying answer to the question, What could I learn just for fun this week?
At the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library, the Creative Lab gives curious residents a place to explore the tools behind everything from three-dimensional models to recorded conversations.
Located on the first floor, the lab offers 3D printers, a podcast studio and a digitization lab, with programs for adults, teens, children and families.
Its activities include TinkerCAD design, Hour of Code, arts and crafts, sewing, fiber arts and open STEAM time.
STEAM brings science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics together, making room for both careful problem-solving and playful experimentation.
A simple design question can become a reason to explore shapes, while an interest in storytelling can become a reason to learn about recording.
That combination makes the lab an appealing starting point for a hobby or a family conversation about how everyday things are made.
The setting has a local backstory worth discovering, too.
Cocoa’s public library roots reach back to 1895, when a community group called AVILAH helped establish a library in a rented room.
Residents supplied books and furniture, and local women shared the work of running it.
The early room cost just $5 a month to rent, a small beginning for an institution that would keep finding new ways to serve its neighbors.
In January 1990, a former newspaper building was dedicated as the Central Brevard Library and Reference Center.
The Creative Lab opened in 2016, adding another chapter to that long tradition of community learning.
Today, the larger library also offers free Wi-Fi and access to Adobe Creative Suite on select computers, along with meeting and study spaces.
The connection across the years is easy to appreciate: people pooling resources so their neighbors can read, learn and create.
For a visit, head to 308 Forrest Avenue in Cocoa and check the lab’s current program calendar first.
Call 321-633-2108 to ask about equipment access, registration and any project requirements before bringing materials.
Your next good idea might begin with an ordinary trip to the library. |
