From Stray to National Hero: Brevard County's Sgt. Bo Honored as 2025 Hero Dog

Sgt. Bo, a once-homeless dog from Brevard County, has been named the 2025 American Humane Hero Dog, a testament to his remarkable transformation and dedication to service.

 

Discovered as a stray in Brevard County, Sgt. Bo was rescued and enrolled in the Paws & Stripes College, an inmate-guided program run by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. This initiative pairs inmates with shelter dogs, providing mutual rehabilitation and training opportunities.

 

Under the guidance of inmates, Sgt. Bo developed skills that would later prove invaluable in his role as a therapy dog. His gentle demeanor and intuitive nature made him an ideal candidate for providing comfort in crisis situations.

 

After completing his training, Sgt. Bo was paired with K9 Handler Faye Okert of the Metro Nashville Police Department. Together, they embarked on a mission to support students and communities in need.

 

In the aftermath of a tragic school shooting in Nashville, Sgt. Bo played a crucial role in comforting grieving students. His calm presence and empathetic nature provided solace during an incredibly challenging time.

 

Reflecting on his impact, Okert noted, "He just knew what people needed. Sometimes he offered affection; sometimes he simply sat and listened."

 

For Sheriff Wayne Ivey of Brevard County, Sgt. Bo's achievements underscore the success of the Paws & Stripes College program. "This program helps so many people," Ivey stated. "From the inmates who train these dogs, to the children and people they go on to comfort, to the communities they ultimately protect."

 

Now retired, Sgt. Bo continues to inspire as a symbol of hope and the transformative power of second chances. His journey from a stray in Brevard County to a national hero highlights the profound impact of compassion and dedicated service.
