This decision ensures that the Hundred Acre Hollows in Suntree will remain a protected wildlife habitat indefinitely.
Established in 2016, Hundred Acre Hollows is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting wildlife, restoring habitats, and engaging the public. The area is home to over 300 gopher tortoises, a keystone species vital to the local ecosystem. The recent inclusion in the EEL Program not only safeguards the land from future development but also provides additional resources for habitat restoration and educational initiatives.
The EEL Program, initiated in 1990 and reaffirmed by voters in 2004, aims to conserve Brevard County's natural habitats through the acquisition and management of environmentally sensitive lands. To date, the program has protected more than 28,000 acres, offering passive recreation and environmental education opportunities to residents and visitors alike.
Local residents and environmentalists have expressed strong support for this preservation effort. The decision reflects a growing community commitment to maintaining natural spaces amidst ongoing development pressures. By securing Hundred Acre Hollows under the EEL Program, Brevard County continues to prioritize the protection of its unique ecosystems for future generations.
For those interested in experiencing this conservation area firsthand, Hundred Acre Hollows is open to visitors on Sundays, two hours before sunset. The entrance is located at the end of a vacant lot on Rock Springs Drive in the Springs of Suntree neighborhood. Parking is available on the street or at the nearby Springs of Suntree Clubhouse. Visitors are encouraged to check the organization's website for specific opening dates and times, as the preserve is fully managed by dedicated volunteers.
This development marks a significant step forward in wildlife habitat restoration efforts within the Suntree conservation area and underscores the importance of community involvement in environmental preservation. |
