Kay's Bar-B-Q Bids Farewell After 45 Years in Cocoa |
Beloved eatery to close doors following owner's passing |
After an incredible 45-year journey, Kay's Bar-B-Q in Cocoa is set to close its doors.
Longtime patrons have until September 7 to enjoy one last meal and express their gratitude to the dedicated staff.
Originally opening as "Fat Boys Bar-B-Q," the restaurant became Kay's Bar-B-Q over three decades ago, solidifying its place as a community staple.
The decision to close follows the passing of owner Valerie "Kay" Keller on July 3, 2025.
Her husband of 37 years, Juan Azpiri, shared his heartfelt sentiments, stating, "We were supposed to retire and travel, but Kay did not want to leave her customers and staff. She loved them. We have a loyal customer base."
Azpiri plans to honor her wishes by traveling before relocating to Spain next summer.
Longtime server Nicole Tuttle expressed her sorrow, saying, "I've worked here for at least 20 years. My whole family has—from my grandma on down—we've all worked for Fat Boy's or Kay's."
Her sister, Shannon Tuttle, has been part of the team for 30 years.
Located at 1552 King Street, Kay's Bar-B-Q will remain open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. until its final day.
Guests can still enjoy classic dishes like fried catfish, steak and eggs, French dip sandwiches, St. Louis-style ribs, and BBQ beef and pork.
As Cocoa bids farewell to this cherished establishment, the local dining scene continues to evolve.
In recent years, several restaurants have closed, including the Village Bier Garten in Historic Downtown Cocoa Village, which shut its doors in January 2025.
However, new ventures are on the horizon.
The Destination Downtown Food Hall in Cocoa Beach is set to open in the summer of 2025, offering a variety of culinary options.
Additionally, Keke's Breakfast Cafe is planning a second Brevard location in Viera, transforming the former Melbourne Seafood Station into a new breakfast and lunch spot.
While the closure of Kay's Bar-B-Q marks the end of an era, the spirit of community and culinary innovation in Cocoa remains strong.
Residents and visitors alike can look forward to new dining experiences that continue to enrich the local food landscape. |
