Image Courtesy of Space Coast Daily The Titusville Police Department has initiated Phase 1 of its automated speed enforcement program in school zones, aiming to enhance student safety by curbing speeding violations.
As of March 9, automated cameras are operational in six school zones across the city.
These cameras monitor vehicle speeds and capture images of those exceeding the posted limits by 11 mph or more.
During the initial 60-day warning period, which runs through May 8, violators will receive mailed warnings without financial penalties.
After this period, formal citations will be issued, carrying a $100 fine.
The program operates 30 minutes before and after school hours, as well as throughout the entire school day.
Each recorded violation undergoes review by a police officer before a notice is sent to the vehicle's registered owner.
Deputy Chief Tyler Wright emphasized that the initiative aims to change driver behavior and protect children, noting that speed safety cameras are a proven tool that helps reduce speeding, crashes, and pedestrian injuries in school zones.
Initial assessments revealed alarming statistics: at Oak Park Elementary and James Madison Middle School, 76% of vehicles exceeded the speed limit by over 11 mph during school hours.
Similarly, Titusville High School reported a 70% violation rate.
These figures underscore the urgent need for enhanced enforcement measures.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the program's progress and adhere to posted speed limits to ensure the safety of all students.
