Artemis II Launch Updates in Brevard County Florida |
Latest details on the Artemis II delay and mission timeline |
NASA's Artemis II mission has encountered another setback, as the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket is being rolled back to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center due to a helium flow issue in the rocket's upper stage.
The rollback process, covering approximately 4 miles, is expected to take up to 12 hours.
Once back in the VAB, teams will install platforms to access the area of concern and replace batteries in the flight termination system and the upper stage.
This development has postponed the launch, originally slated for early March, to no earlier than April.
Despite a successful wet dress rehearsal on February 19, where over 700,000 gallons of cryogenic propellants were loaded and launch operations simulated, the helium system malfunction necessitated this rollback.
The Artemis II mission aims to send a four-person crew on a 10-day trip around the moon, marking the first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years.
The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
They have been released from pre-launch quarantine due to the delay and are currently in Houston.
NASA continues to investigate the helium flow issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available. |
